About

The Jewelry Loupe is a blog/magazine for jewelry lovers, celebrating human ornament in all its facets. I’ll take you behind the scenes at the hottest jewelry auctions, dig up the coolest stuff I can find from designers and studio metalsmiths present and past, as well as the wackiest wearable art. You’ll also get the inside scoop from the world’s leading experts on how to buy, sell and care for gems and jewelry.

If you’ve landed here, you’re probably already fascinated by jewelry. So you’ll understand when I say I’ve been covering this topic for a long time and it never gets old. Jewelry is the perfect microcosm for just about every interesting subject I can think of: sociology, anthropology, business, culture, greed, creativity – I’ll stop. If you don’t know what I mean, stick around.

Beyond that, is there anything more intoxicating than looking at a fine gemstone or a beautifully designed and crafted jewel? Besides wearing it. Or owning it. (That part’s up to you.)

Founding Editor Cathleen McCarthy (that’s me) started out editing a magazine on fashion jewelry (anyone remember Accent?), then moved on to art jewelry, fine jewelry, antique and contemporary jewelry, and just about everything in between. I’ve covered the subject for Art & Antiques, JCK and Lapidary Journal for more than a decade.

You can also find my byline in AmericanStyle, Town & Country, Country Living, The Washington Post and Portfolio.com (samples here), among others. I also write about other types of art and design – and my other favorite subject, travel. I cover that one at my other site, The City Traveler. Hope to see you around.

Thank you for your great article in Jewelry Artist “Reinventing the Wedding Ring.” One of the best articles in Lapidary Journal that I have seen. That issue will be a hard act for the editors to follow. I am really enjoying your website. Great info, very well done..

I am a sailor, actor and jewelry lover. Don’t have much time for anything else. Check out the blog of designer Halle Richardson, romancing the stone, my love affair with jewelry. She mentioned you and designers that are unknown to the mass audience.

    Love your blog!

    GO Sailing!!

    Dear Jewelry Loupe,

I purchased a piece of jewelry depicting three sunflowers on a rectangular piece of copper (?) On the back is an inscription ERNST in caps. I am trying to find out who made the piece and would be amazed if it was one of Max Ernst’s pieces. I can only find one image of his jewelry on your site but no others. Do you have more images of his work or could you send a copy of how he signed his pieces so I could see if the signature matches? I am most curious.
    Thanks,
    Cynthia
